Two things came to my mind when I read this story and thought about how it relates to doing business with Amazon. First of all, every sourcing method (RA, OA, Wholesale, or Private Label) has its own challenges. While getting authorization letters from manufacturers to prove authenticity is no longer a problem for those who do wholesale, you still need to constantly look for new items for wholesaling as competitors will eventually come in and tank the profit. Creating and building a brand via PL entitles someone to be the only seller for a while, but it wouldn't stop another seller from discovering, studying, and then eventually offering an improved version of your products. Also, Kickstarter or any crowdsourcing platform offers a unique way to validate demand for a product. Demand drives supply and, therefore, profit. Amazon offers an ample amount of customer data that 3rd party sellers can use to determine what products to bring in and to make profits in the process of fulfilling that demand.
